Gear Rack and Pinion systems are commonly used as a means to convert rotating movement to linear motion.

A gear rack has straight teeth cut into a section of a square rod – and sometimes operates as the stationary component of the system; while the pinion (an external gear usually on the end of a shaft) rotates and traverses along the rack.

However depending on the system the pinion may rotate on an axis while the rack slides across.
